Painting a Day - Day 174 - The Big Experiment - Final I finally got a full day away from the aquarium and other responsibilities and spent the whole day putting on the finishing touches. I also changed the name when I realized that the dancers weren't really dressed for a Samba. All in all, I don't think that working on black suits me at all. I won't throw out the idea entirely, but for now I'm anxious to go back to my usual technique. "South Beach Salsa" 30x24 inches

Fresh out of excuses
Okay, so I can't keep up with the lame excuses. It's true that I've had a lot of significant distractions over the last few months, but I never let that stop me before. I think I'm in some sort of inspirational rut. We're taking off to the Bahamas for the week to rest and recharge. Hopefully I'll be back with more than a tan. Six and a Half Excuses
Here's my excuse for not painting at all last week. Almost all of my Kung Fu brothers descended upon the ATL. These are my closest friends in the world, so naturally I dropped everything for them. We were out every night until nearly sunup pickling our brains with bourbon and tequila. On Friday Brandon, who has become quite the amateur chef prepared one of the finest meals I've ever enjoyed. Here's a shot; Clockwise from left to right - Me, Brian Corsi, Curt Thrasher, Brandon Murphy, Kelly Vaden, Christopher Thorne,DJ Sienna, Cadell Vaden, and Maria Balais Current Mood: EnervatedCurrent Music: Diana Krall |

Painting a Day - Day 170 - The Big Experiment - Day Three
I feel I must apologize for the irregularity of these posts lately. The problem is that I committed to managing a caricature booth at The Georgia Aquarium for the Summer to help pay some bills and it's taking all my time away. I get home after sitting out in the heat, drawing tourists all afternoon with my pockets richer, but my spirit drained. I sit in the studio and just stare at the canvas. Unable to focus and slip in to that "zen" state of mind that allows the paint to flow. Anyway, I managed to do a little more today. Painting a Day - Day 169 - The Big Experiment - Day One
I've had a horrible time concentrating on painting lately and it's driving me crazy. In the hope that a challenge might help me to regain focus, I bought a jar of black gesso. You may not see the significance of this, but when you get used to doing things a certain way it can be a real shift in gears to alter your method. I've always begun with a mid-ground tone in my paintings which makes it really easy to move in and out of lighter and darker values. Beginning with black (a color I never even use as a rule) is really not going to be easy. Working with acrylics makes it even harder due to questionable opacity. I predict a lot of layering. Still, I'm anxious to see how it looks. I'll be posting this as a work in progress so that I'll feel pressured to not chicken out half way through. Painting a Day - Day 167 - "Night Cherries" A friend who owns an art supply company asked me to try these new acrylics. They're called High Definition Visual Texture paints. The label is a confusing mix of French and English, and I'm not sure about the palette choices. The interesting bit about them though is that they're fluid and thick at the same time. So they allow you to paint with much more texture than acrylics are normally able without additives. Today was my first try and I'm just not sure yet. It's quite an adjustment from Liquitex. They don't seem to hold up well on my stay-wet palette. I'll keep you posted as this experiment progresses. "Night Cherries" - 7x5 inches

Painting a Day - Day 166 - "Dressing the Doomed"
I apologize for my continued absence but family and personal matters continue to intrude. I hate being out of the studio so long! To fill the gap I'm going to post a few older unsold pieces. Festivale!!!
I've been too exhausted to post anything. This past weekend was our neighborhood festival and I ran the artist market for the 6th year. You have no idea how tiring it is. Juggling the needs of 45 flaky artists is no easy job and the weekend comes with no great amount of sleep. It's totally worth it though. My number one mandate to the festival committee from day one was that we would treat the artists like gold and bend over backwards to make sure all their needs were met. And it works! They love us. Which is probably the only reason that they keep coming back to a young, still finding it's footing, their sales will be mediocre at best festival. I just hope that as we grow and learn how to attract the right crowds that their faith will be rewarded. The weekend was great though. The weather was outstanding, sales were actually pretty good for the artists that worked for them and 99% left happy. Unfortunately, just when I thought I'd have a couple of days to refresh myself, we got a call saying that my Mother -in-law is in the hospital with pneumonia and I've been ferrying my wife back and forth to Chattanooga to handle things. So rest has not been an option. Anyway here's some pics; We're what I like to call a "boutique" festival. Only forty-five artists sharing a single pretty street This is me approaching the lovely and talented Tami Fulford to let her know that she won Third Place in Show. You can't see it here, but she has this amazing black and white pottery that the judges just loved. Third place comes with a pretty ribbon and a $250 check Last year's best of show, metal sculptor Derrick Spivey, had to settle for second place this year and $500. You can see he's thinking "Second?!?"
One of my favorite local painters, Robert Griffis won First Place and $750
But here's our Best of Show Katy Dement! Katy gets the lovely purple ribbon and $1000
"The Festival Comittee" phot op. Actually, most of the committee isn't there. I love how we're all smiling and laughing while Katy's just checking to see if the check is signed. A little artsy girl on girl action And fun was had by all. Well, nearly all. I hope to be back to normal in a day or two. Stay tuned!!! Current Mood: zzzzzz...Current Music: The Sopranos |
